Grandma's Condition

25 Feb 2005

We've been going back and forth between KL and Seremban in the past few days, visiting our beloved Tok (grandma) in Seremban General Hospital. When we first heard news that she was ill and visited her, we had a shock just looking at the dear old lady.

Tok has always been "skinny", not slim. When she first fell ill due to old age, she was literally skin and bones! Early this week when we visited her, another shocker. Her arms and feet were all swollen due to water retention. Nothing much the doctor could do for her due to her condition and age. Her kidneys and liver has failed to function and the body takes time to purge the excess waste, thus causing a bloating condition.

We saw Tok again yesterday. The swelling in her arms and feet are mostly gone and she looks as tired and gaunt as expected for an ill person. We were told that she vomited blood again and this has helped lessen the swelling. People say, as our time in this world nears its end, our bodies will purge as much excess "waste" as it can. It's a sad fact... :(

Tok is more verbal though. Her eyes are alert as always and she is aware of her surroundings. In fact, when we visited her in the hospital, she was more concerned for her guests not having had food (she thinks she is at home). What a soul!!

We are planning to go down to Seremban again today and spend more time with her. May Allah have mercy on her and makes this "transition" an easy one for her. Amin.
